Bhubaneswar, Cuttack Record Coldest Nights in 13 Years
Odisha is facing an intense Cold Wave, with Bhubaneswar recording its coldest night in 13 years at 9.4°C, while Cuttack registered a low of 8.6°C. Residents of the twin cities are experiencing harsh winter conditions, especially during early morning and late-night hours, as temperatures remain significantly below normal.
The last time Bhubaneswar saw a comparable chill was in 2012, when the minimum temperature dropped to 9.3°C.
Cold Wave Extends Across the State
The severe cold is not limited to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Western, eastern, northern, and coastal regions of Odisha are experiencing sharply falling temperatures, disrupting daily life and increasing discomfort. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that cold conditions are likely to persist due to dry, cold northerly winds sweeping across the state.
Yellow Warning Issued in Five Districts
IMD officials have forecast that Severe Cold Wave conditions will continue until January 11. Consequently, a Yellow Weather Warning has been issued in five districts: Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Cuttack, Khordha, and Angul.
The cold spell is accompanied by chilly winds and dense fog, which further affects mobility and daily activities. Currently, 24 towns in Odisha are recording minimum temperatures of 10°C or lower, intensifying the harsh winter impact.
IMD Bulletin Highlights Cold Wave Severity
In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD regional centre reported:
-
Severe Cold Wave conditions prevailed in Angul and Jharsuguda of North Interior Odisha.
-
Cold Wave conditions were observed in Sundargarh, Khordha, and Cuttack.
Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe during the ongoing cold wave.
