Bahawalnagar Floods 2025: Sutlej River Destroys Homes, Crops, and Livelihoods

The Sutlej River has unleashed the worst floods in nearly four decades, leaving Bahawalnagar in ruins. Entire villages, crops, and homes have been destroyed, displacing thousands of families who now struggle for survival without proper shelter, food, or income.

Human Stories of Pain and Loss

One of the most tragic stories is that of Allah Bakhsh, a 90-year-old labourer from Basti Basara Baloch, who lost everything in a matter of minutes.

“I worked all my life to build one house, and the water has taken it away. Where do we go now?” he wept.

Now, he sits under the open sky with his 75-year-old wife and three disabled sons. As a result, his family has no roof, food, or support, highlighting the desperate need for government relief and humanitarian aid.

For many others, this disaster has once again reopened old wounds. For example, Hanifa Bibi, who migrated during the 1988 floods, now lives in a tent again. This time, however, she is without her husband or son, relying only on her daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

In addition, another elderly man visits the ruins of his home daily, breaks down in tears, and returns to his makeshift shelter.

Scale of Destruction

The scope of damage is widespread and alarming:

  • 154 kilometers of river belt have been submerged.

  • All three tehsils of Bahawalnagar are under water.

  • Hundreds of settlements have been wiped out.

  • Thousands of families are homeless and without income.

  • Crops, livestock, and farmlands — the district’s economic backbone — are gone.

Consequently, residents are left hungry, jobless, and hopeless. Some even confessed that, if not for their faith, they might have ended their lives.

Broken Dreams

The floods not only destroyed homes but also shattered futures.

  • For instance, a farmer’s family, who saved for years to prepare dowry for their daughter, lost everything overnight.

  • Meanwhile, women and children along the riverbanks struggle daily for food and clean water.

  • At the same time, men remain unemployed and uncertain about their future.

The Need for Long-Term Solutions

While temporary relief has reached flood-hit families, survivors insist it is not enough. Therefore, they are calling for:

  • Permanent housing solutions

  • Restoration of crops and livestock

  • Sustainable income opportunities

Ultimately, the suffering of Bahawalnagar’s flood victims is not just a local tragedy but a national crisis. Moreover, it is a reminder that beyond sympathy, the real need is action, rehabilitation, and rebuilding lives.
