Odisha’s Chilika Lake Becomes Birdwatchers’ Paradise with Over 11 Lakh Migratory Birds

Chilika Lake in Odisha has turned into a safe haven for migratory birds this winter. Tourists and birdwatchers from across India are visiting the lake. It is Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon. Thousands of birds arrive every year, starting the annual migratory season.

Migratory Season at Chilika Lake

According to Amlan Nayak, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Chilika Wildlife Division, the migratory bird season begins in October and lasts until March.

Birds gather at many spots around the lake. The most popular areas are Nalbana Bird Sanctuary and Mangalajodi.

“In our latest survey, we counted about 11.27 lakh migratory birds across Chilika,” Nayak said. This shows the ecological importance of the wetland.

To protect the birds, the forest department has set up 21 bird camps around the lake.

Conservation and Awareness Efforts

The forest department has increased conservation measures. It also runs awareness programs for schools and local communities. People are taught about the importance of migratory birds and wetland protection.

Special sessions are held at vulnerable areas. Round-the-clock patrolling helps prevent poaching.

“These efforts have helped reduce poaching in the Chilika region,” Nayak said.

Boost to Eco-Tourism and Biodiversity

Chilika Lake has favorable weather and rich biodiversity. It is one of India’s most important wintering grounds for migratory birds.

The lake supports wildlife conservation and attracts many tourists. Experts say continued conservation is needed to preserve this unique ecological hotspot.
