No Star Heroine, 3.5-Hour Runtime, Adult Certificate — Yet a Massive Hit: How Dhurandhar Rewrote Bollywood Rules

Bollywood’s Comfort Zone Meets a Bold Disruption

Bollywood has long relied on predictability. Familiar faces, safe runtimes, clean certificates, and proven formulas often shape decision-making. This approach does not always create better cinema, but it does make box office results easier to forecast.

However, Dhurandhar arrived as a complete disruption. Instead of following industry norms, it challenged every major Bollywood rule—and still emerged as a full-fledged blockbuster. As a result, the film became impossible for the industry to ignore.

A Film That Looked Risky on Paper

On the surface, Dhurandhar appeared loaded with commercial risks.
There was no star heroine, a 3.5-hour runtime, an ‘Adults-only’ certificate, and unfiltered violence. In most cases, even one of these factors is enough to worry producers and exhibitors.

Yet, surprisingly, Dhurandhar turned these risks into strengths.

Ranveer Singh at the Core — Not as a Safety Net, but a Statement

A Performance Fueled by Hunger, Not Comfort

The film placed Ranveer Singh at its centre during a phase when public discourse had begun to scrutinise his track record more than his stardom. In Bollywood, such moments often weaken a project.

However, Dhurandhar did the opposite. It positioned Ranveer not as a decorative star, but as the driving force of the narrative. Consequently, the audience witnessed a performer operating with raw intensity, urgency, and conviction.

Importantly, viewers do not reject stars for past missteps. Instead, they reject complacency. In this case, Ranveer’s aggressive, all-in energy became the emotional backbone of the film’s success.

No Established Heroine — And Why That Worked

World-Building Over Familiar Faces

Another bold move was the absence of a well-known female lead. Traditionally, Bollywood treats star heroines as marketing anchors. However, Dhurandhar quietly proved that event cinema does not always need familiarity.

When a film is positioned as adult, large-scale, and immersive, audiences are not buying a pairing—they are buying a world. Therefore, the presence of a fresh face removed preconceived expectations and helped the story feel grounded and real.

In this case, freshness enhanced credibility, rather than reducing appeal.

A Supporting Cast Chosen for Impact, Not Recent Box Office Numbers

Actors as Instruments, Not Insurance Policies

The supporting lineup—Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal—sparked debate before release. While all are respected names, trade circles often judge actors based on recent box office returns.

Dhurandhar rejected that shallow logic.

  • Sanjay Dutt brought a mythic presence that instantly raised the film’s gravity

  • Arjun Rampal delivered cold, controlled intensity, perfect for modern action drama

  • Akshaye Khanna, riding strong momentum, added audience curiosity and unpredictability

Together, they made the film feel dangerous, dense, and cinematic. As a result, the ensemble added texture rather than just star value.

The Runtime Debate — Why Length Wasn’t a Problem

Audiences Don’t Lack Patience, They Lack Reward

At three and a half hours, the runtime appeared to be the biggest commercial obstacle. Longer films reduce daily shows and make exhibitors cautious. Critics often attack length before assessing content.

However, the real issue is not patience—it is engagement.

Dhurandhar consistently paid the audience back with escalation, tension, and scale. Therefore, the length felt like value, not excess. In a market obsessed with speed, the film made a compelling counter-offer: give us your time, and we’ll give you a complete theatrical experience.

A Familiar Theme, Executed with Fresh Urgency

Turning a Repeated Idea into a Pressure Cooker

The India–Pakistan conflict theme has been used many times before. Naturally, some expected fatigue. However, repetition only fails when treated casually.

Here, the theme was handled with intensity and urgency. Familiarity allowed the film to dive straight into stakes and conflict, instead of explaining the landscape. As a result, the tension felt sharper and more immediate.

Violence and ‘A’ Certificate — A Clear Identity, Not a Limitation

Clarity Can Be More Powerful Than Safety

Bollywood often treats adult certification and gore as commercial liabilities. Dhurandhar used them as positioning tools.

The ‘A’ certificate sent a clear message:
This film would not dilute its action or soften its edges.

That honesty attracted the right audience. People do not always seek safe cinema. Often, they seek something bold, different, and uncompromised—especially when it is presented as an event.

Box Office Impact That Rewrote Records

Sustained Collections That Shocked the Trade

The film’s box office performance has been nothing short of historic. Opening at Rs. 28.70 crore, Dhurandhar matched that figure on its 21st day, earning Rs. 28.60 crore—an achievement rarely seen in Indian cinema.

Currently, the film has crossed Rs. 668.80 crore, with projections placing it firmly into the Rs. 700 crore club, and potentially beyond Rs. 750–800 crore by the end of its fourth weekend.

Moreover, combined footfalls of Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2 are now expected to rank among the highest in Indian cinema history, alongside classics like Sholay and Mughal-e-Azam.
