Bangladesh Summons Indian Envoy Over Protests and Visa Centre Damage

Bangladesh has summoned India’s high commissioner after protests and vandalism targeted its diplomatic facilities in India, raising diplomatic concerns.

Dhaka Voices Serious Security Concerns

On Tuesday, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry called in Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma in Dhaka.

The ministry expressed strong concern over protests near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. It also cited damage at a Bangladesh visa centre in Siliguri.

Officials said the incidents occurred on December 20 and December 22.

Bangladesh Condemns Attacks on Diplomatic Property

Bangladesh strongly condemned the violence and called it planned and unacceptable.

The ministry said the acts put diplomatic staff at risk. It warned that such actions violate international diplomatic rules.

Dhaka urged India to investigate the incidents quickly. It also asked New Delhi to ensure full security for Bangladeshi missions.

India Responds to Bangladesh’s Concerns

India’s External Affairs Ministry said a small group of protesters gathered near the mission.

Officials said police removed the group within minutes. India stressed its commitment to protect all foreign diplomatic missions.

However, Bangladesh rejected claims that reports were misleading. Dhaka said the incidents were real and serious.

Political Unrest Adds Pressure

Tensions come as Bangladesh faces internal unrest after the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi.

He died last week during the launch of his election campaign. His death sparked protests across the country.

Some demonstrations led to arson and property damage. Protesters demanded justice and accountability.

Visa Services Suspended on Both Sides

Due to security risks, Bangladesh has paused visa and consular services in New Delhi.

At the same time, the Indian Visa Application Centre in Chattogram has stopped operations. Officials cited safety concerns.

Fresh Protests Near Bangladesh Mission

On Tuesday, hundreds of protesters gathered in New Delhi near Bangladesh’s High Commission.

They protested the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu factory worker in Bangladesh.

A mob attacked him in Mymensingh district over blasphemy claims. Police have arrested at least 10 suspects.

Protesters clashed with police and tried to break barricades. Some called for a boycott of Bangladesh.

Similar protests took place in other Indian cities and Kashmir.

Diplomatic Ties Under Strain

The recent incidents have strained India-Bangladesh relations.

Experts say both sides must reduce tensions through dialogue. They also stress the need for strong law enforcement to prevent further unrest.
