“Severe Cyclone Dana Nears Odisha: Mass Evacuations, Flight and Train Disruptions Underway”

Massive Evacuations to Relief Camps

As Cyclone Dana intensifies, Odisha and West Bengal authorities have begun relocating thousands to relief camps and safe locations. By October 25, over 3.5 lakh people in Odisha and 2.4 lakh in West Bengal had been evacuated, preparing for severe storm impacts.

Cyclone Path and Projected Impact

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Cyclone Dana has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm. Positioned 90 km southeast of Paradip, Odisha, the cyclone is expected to make landfall near Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port, with wind speeds reaching 120 km/h.

Service Disruptions Across States

To ensure safety, Kolkata Airport suspended operations from 6 PM Thursday until 9 AM Friday. Bhubaneswar Airport is also closed from 5 PM Thursday until 9 AM Friday. More than 400 trains across Odisha and West Bengal have been canceled in anticipation of the storm’s impact.

Government Response and Emergency Measures

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is actively monitoring the cyclone’s approach, discussing Odisha’s preparedness with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The PM checked on evacuation efforts and deployment of disaster response teams, including the NDRF.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed the evacuation of 2,43,374 residents to 851 operational relief camps and assured that a 24/7 helpline is in place to assist affected individuals.

Localized Risk Zones in Odisha

The Odisha government has designated high-risk zones, including Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore districts, and categorized Mayurbhanj with expected wind speeds of 80-100 km/h. Approximately 3.5 lakh people have been moved to 4,756 relief centers, equipped with food and essential supplies.

Naval and Disaster Relief Preparedness

The Indian Navy is mobilizing for humanitarian assistance, deploying emergency supplies like food, water, and medicines to potentially affected areas. Flood relief and diving teams are prepared for coordinated response operations if needed.

Rail and Bus Service Suspensions

The East Coast Railways canceled 203 trains through Odisha, with bus services halted until the cyclone passes. The South Eastern Railway also canceled over 170 express and passenger trains, and Eastern Railway canceled 68 suburban trains to ensure passenger safety.

Safety First as Cyclone Dana Nears Landfall

As Cyclone Dana approaches, authorities focus on minimizing risks and ensuring public safety in impacted regions. Local officials continue to monitor the situation, ready to respond as needed to protect residents from the storm’s effects.
