A shocking incident took place in Odisha’s Malkangiri district, where a Class 10 student gave birth to a premature baby inside her state-run residential school hostel on Monday evening, shortly after completing her board exam.
Teen and Newborn Shifted to Hospital
The teen and her newborn were immediately taken to the Chitrakonda Sub-Divisional Hospital and later shifted to the Malkangiri district headquarters hospital for further medical care.
Pregnancy Went Unnoticed by School Authorities
According to India Today, the girl attended classes and appeared for exams without anyone noticing her pregnancy. Her parents blamed the school administration, while the teachers pointed fingers at the hostel warden for negligence.
Authorities Take Action
Following an official inquiry, the Malkangiri district administration suspended the headmaster on Tuesday. Additionally, hostel matron Suchitra Charchi was dismissed, and an auxiliary nurse and midwife were suspended for failing in their duties.
School Officials Deny Responsibility
The headmaster of the school, which operates under the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Class Welfare Department, stated:
“Men are not allowed inside the girls’ hostel. We have no idea how she got pregnant.”
The headmaster also revealed that health workers are responsible for conducting weekly health check-ups for hostel students, suggesting that the assigned health worker failed to perform her duties.
Authorities Suspect Pregnancy Happened During Vacation
District Welfare Officer Srinivas Acharya suggested that the girl may have conceived during her visit home for vacation. An official departmental inquiry is currently underway.
Police Investigation Underway
The suspected father, reportedly a local boy in a relationship with the girl, has been questioned by the police.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer Pradosh Pradhan, a case has been registered under multiple sections of the POCSO Act and BNS.
Parents Demand Answers
The girl’s parents have questioned the school administration’s negligence, asking how the pregnancy went unnoticed until the girl went into labor.
This disturbing incident has raised serious concerns over student safety, hostel management, and school accountability in Odisha.
