Universal Music India is bringing back the magic of Bollywood’s timeless songs. The label recently returned to film soundtracks with Param Sundari, Songs of Paradise, and Ufff Yeh Siyapaa. Now, it wants to reintroduce its Bollywood catalogue to new listeners.
Vinyl Comeback and a Fresh Digital Push
In July, Universal reissued Bollywood classics on vinyl records through a deal with distributor Basking Shark. The label is now going digital with a new Hindi web series that reimagines legendary tracks.
Ek Aur Baar Kishore Kumar
The short weekly series, Ek Aur Baar Kishore Kumar, runs for 11 episodes. Each episode features a classic Kishore Kumar hit in a new form.
-
The show keeps Kishore Kumar’s original vocals, extracted with modern audio tools.
-
Current singers record fresh parts, creating virtual duets.
-
Veteran composer Shamir Tandon produces the music and adds new lyrics for today’s listeners.
Singer Amit Kumar, Kishore Kumar’s son, guided the project to keep it true to his father’s legacy.
Songs Released So Far
Since August, Universal has released three tracks:
-
Saagar Kinare (Saagar, 1985) with folk artist Mame Khan
-
Jaane Jaan (Jawani Diwani, 1972) with Amit Kumar and Harshdeep Kaur
-
Aisa Kabhi Hua Nahin (Yeh Vaada Raha, 1982) with Neeti Mohan
Connecting With Fans Offline
Universal is also taking the idea beyond streaming. From September 22 to 28, it will host Fan Social karaoke nights in five cities: Gurugram, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Indore, and Pune. Fans will get a chance to sing Kishore Kumar’s classics in a lively setting.
Why It Matters
Kishore Kumar’s songs still echo across concerts, tribute shows, and reality TV. But Universal wants younger listeners to experience them on streaming platforms. The success of this series will show whether Gen-Z and Gen Alpha accept the classics in a modern format.
By mixing nostalgia with innovation, Universal Music India hopes to revive Bollywood’s golden songs and pass them on to a new generation.
