Following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, including tourists, India has ordered the deportation of Pakistani nationals living on short-term visas. This decision comes as part of a government directive issued in response to rising tensions.
Visa Revocation and Deportation Process
The Ministry of External Affairs announced that all Pakistani visas will be revoked by April 27, except for medical visas, which will remain valid until April 29. States across India are now working to ensure that Pakistani nationals leave the country promptly.
Maharashtra Takes Action
In Maharashtra, 55 Pakistani nationals have been asked to leave by April 27. These individuals are located in cities such as Nagpur, Thane, Jalgaon, and Pune. Police authorities have been instructed to ensure their deportation. Nashik authorities have confirmed the presence of six Pakistani women, but they have not yet received formal orders for their deportation.
Karnataka Initiates Deportation
In Karnataka, authorities have begun identifying Pakistani nationals for deportation. Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirmed that the government is taking action in line with the Centre’s advisory. Pakistani nationals, including students, are being asked to leave the state as part of the nationwide effort.
Bihar and Odisha Join Efforts
In Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary stated that the state is working to identify and deport Pakistani nationals under the central government’s directive. Meanwhile, in Odisha, 12 Pakistani nationals have been identified, and authorities are moving swiftly to deport them within 48 hours of receiving official notices.
Response to the Pahalgam Attack
This deportation drive follows the Pahalgam terror attack, which heightened security concerns. The attack, which was linked to Pakistan-based militants, has worsened tensions between India and Pakistan. In response, India has also taken measures like suspending the Indus Waters Treaty.
Urgency and Compliance Across States
States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, and Odisha have quickly complied with the central government’s order. Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally contacted state chief ministers to ensure full cooperation and prompt action.
The revocation of visas and deportation of Pakistani nationals demonstrates India’s firm stance on national security and its commitment to addressing cross-border terrorism.
