A nationwide strike called by 10 major central trade unions disrupted daily life across India on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. Known as ‘Bharat Bandh,’ the protest caused traffic blocks, shop closures, and delays in public transport.
Roads and Railways Affected
In Odisha, protesters from the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) blocked highways near Bhubaneswar. As a result, traffic came to a standstill.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, all major shops and malls in Kottayam stayed shut. Protesters showed their support for the strike by staying off the streets.
In Bihar, student members of Biju Janata Dal (RJD) blocked railway tracks at Jehanabad station. Similarly, in West Bengal, trains were delayed due to protesters occupying tracks at multiple stations, including Jadavpur.
Bus Drivers Take Safety Precautions
To stay safe, bus drivers of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) wore helmets during duty. This move was made after reports of unrest along the bus routes. However, this safety measure was not implemented in the Darjeeling Hills.
Protests Led by Left Unions
Left party-backed unions led major demonstrations. They accused the central government of weakening worker protections through its pro-corporate policies. Despite heavy police presence, union members gathered at railway stations and blocked tracks to voice their anger.

According to CITU General Secretary Tapan Kumar Sen, the protest was based on a 17-point demand list. One major demand is to cancel the labour codes passed in 2020. Unions believe these codes reduce workers’ rights and weaken trade unions.
