Deputy CM Pravati Parida Announces a Dedicated Court for Crimes Against Women
Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, Pravati Parida, has announced the state’s plan to establish an all-women court to handle cases related to crimes against women. The initiative aims to create a safe and supportive legal environment where survivors of sexual violence can seek justice without fear or intimidation.
A Court Exclusively Led by Women
Speaking at the second foundation day of Odisha Women in Media (OWM) in Bhubaneswar, Parida highlighted that the court will be operated entirely by women, including judges, lawyers, clerks, and administrative staff. The move is intended to make legal proceedings more survivor-friendly, reducing the trauma of testifying in a male-dominated space.
“A gender-sensitive judicial process will encourage more survivors to come forward and seek justice without hesitation,” said Parida.
Shakti App: A Digital Solution for Survivors
During her address, Parida also emphasized the importance of the Shakti app, launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. This app enables survivors to digitally record their testimonies, which can later be used as evidence in court, helping them avoid the distress of repeating their experiences multiple times.
“The Shakti app will streamline legal processes and make it easier for survivors to seek justice while minimizing emotional distress,” she added.
Safety Audits and Media Support for Women’s Empowerment
As part of the larger effort to enhance women’s safety, Pravati Parida urged women journalists to conduct safety audits of public places across Odisha. She also encouraged the Odisha Women in Media (OWM), a 200-member media collective, to mentor and train young female journalists, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.
The Odisha government’s initiative sets a groundbreaking precedent in ensuring gender-sensitive legal reforms, providing justice, safety, and empowerment for women across the state.
